Brett
Brett Tushingham has spent more than 20 years in wealth management, helping families plan for retirement and navigate the financial decisions that come with this stage of life. He began his career on Wall Street, where he gained experience in the financial industry before deciding he wanted to work more directly with families and their financial goals. That shift led Brett to financial advising. Since 2014, he has owned and operated a wealth management practice focused on retirement and tax planning for families nearing retirement. His work commonly addresses questions around retirement income, Social Security, taxes, and estate considerations. Brett is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and holds a BBA in Finance from Pace University. Based in Wilmington, North Carolina, he works with clients nationwide.
How did you become a financial advisor?
I started my career on Wall Street, but over time I realized I wanted to work more directly with people and their financial lives. I’ve always enjoyed solving problems and improving outcomes for people, and financial advising gave me the chance to do that with families planning for their futures. More than 20 years later, that's what I still value about this work.
What types of clients do you work with?
I primarily work with families nearing retirement who want a clear plan for the years ahead. Many are thinking about how to reduce their tax burden, create a lifetime income strategy, make informed Social Security decisions, and preserve the investments they have spent years building. They often want someone who will proactively manage the different pieces of their financial lives so they can spend more of their time enjoying what they have worked toward.
What areas of expertise do you have?
My work centers on retirement planning, tax minimization, income planning, Social Security planning, and estate planning. These areas are closely connected, particularly as clients approach retirement, so I look at how decisions in one area may affect the others.
What kinds of strategies do you help clients with?
I help clients work through questions such as when to begin Social Security, how to approach taxes throughout retirement, and how to create a lifetime income strategy. The goal is to bring these decisions together within a coordinated plan rather than treating each one separately.
What is your favorite part of working with clients?
Few professions allow you to have such a direct, positive impact on people’s lives. I especially enjoy guiding clients through significant transitions, including the move into retirement, and helping them work through the financial decisions that come with those changes.
What is it like partnering with Savvy?
What I value about working with Savvy is the time it gives me to focus on client relationships and planning. I can concentrate on taking a proactive approach to retirement and tax planning, identifying issues that may need attention, and being fully present in conversations with my clients.
