Chan Lim
Hi, I’m Chan. Today I bring nearly 30 years of capital markets experience to the individuals and families I serve.
My approach is built around a simple principle: person before portfolio. Before deciding how assets should be invested, I want to understand what those assets are meant to accomplish. From there, I help bring the pieces together across financial planning, taxes, investments, estate considerations, and insurance while managing client portfolios directly.
I own my practice. Savvy Advisors is the registered investment advisor behind me, providing technology, compliance, and operations — but I make the investment decisions for my clients’ portfolios myself.
“Person before portfolio. I start by understanding what your wealth is meant to accomplish, then coordinate the different pieces of your financial life around that purpose.”
How can I help?
Financial Planning & Analysis
Tax Optimization
I aim to take the ambiguity out of tax planning by utilizing tax-reducing strategies that encompass your overall tax liability. I do it by putting together a game plan that is specific to your needs.
Investment Management
End-to-end investment management focused on tailoring portfolios to each client's specific circumstances and preferences. My holistic approach will take into consideration all facets of your situation along with current economic data to optimize your portfolio's risk and return.
Employer-Sponsored Plans
With streamlined plan management, my goal is to provide an exceptional experience for business owners and participants. Serving as a 3(38) Investment Fiduciary, Savvy assumes full responsibility for the selection and oversight of funds and model portfolios, thereby mitigating plan liability risks for the plan sponsor.
Get to know Chan
Chan Lim brings nearly 30 years of capital markets experience to the clients and families he serves. He began his career on the floor of the Chicago Board Options Exchange, where he spent 15 years as a proprietary options and derivatives trader.
His career later took him into institutional relationship management, where he worked with volatility funds and developed relationships with investment managers. Those one-on-one conversations helped Chan realize how much he valued working directly with people and understanding the thinking behind their financial decisions.
That realization led him to private wealth management, where years of working alongside CPAs made tax planning central to how he approaches every client. Today, Chan works with a broad range of clients, from people beginning to invest beyond their workplace retirement plans to retirees, business owners, and individuals managing concentrated stock positions or equity compensation.
Rather than viewing investments in isolation, Chan serves as a central point of coordination among a client's CPA, estate attorney, insurance professionals, and other advisors. His guiding principle is "person before portfolio," beginning with what a client wants their wealth to accomplish before determining how it should be deployed.
Chan holds the Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF) designation. He is also an Illinois Life & Health Insurance Producer and earned his BS in Finance from the University of Illinois.

After 15 years as an options trader on the CBOE floor and time in institutional relationship management, I realized the part I valued most was working one-on-one with people. That led me to private wealth management, where I combine my markets background with the personal side of planning.
My work includes options and derivatives strategies, tax-aware portfolio construction, concentrated stock and equity compensation, and business owner planning.
Because of my background in capital markets, portfolio construction is an important part of what I do. At the same time, I look beyond the portfolio to understand how investment decisions connect with taxes and the rest of a client’s financial plan.
I work with a broad range of clients rather than focusing on a single category. That includes retirees as well as people who have reached the point where they can begin investing beyond their 401(k).
I also work with business owners, people with concentrated stock positions or equity compensation, and clients whose financial situations require coordination across investments, taxes, estate considerations, and insurance.
I focus on tax planning and optimization because they are crucial aspects to consider when managing your finances. By strategizing efficient ways to minimize tax liabilities and maximize savings, my clients can plan for the future. Additionally, I also help clients with retirement planning, Investment management, and cash flow planning because they are essential for maintaining a healthy financial balance.
I frequently help clients with multi-year tax planning, managing concentrated stock positions, active portfolio management, and retirement plan design for business owners.
Depending on the client’s circumstances, my work may also involve options strategies, portfolio considerations around equity compensation, and coordination with a client’s CPA, attorney, or insurance professional.
The objective is to understand how those individual decisions fit together rather than treating each one as a separate issue.
I handle two responsibilities that are often separated. I own the client relationship and coordinate across taxes, estate considerations, insurance, and investments, while also managing the portfolio directly.
That means I remain closely involved in both the financial planning conversations and the investment decisions. My background in options, derivatives, and institutional markets informs how I evaluate portfolios, but the process starts with understanding the person and what they want their wealth to accomplish.
I want to be the first call.
For me, the relationship is about more than a scheduled quarterly review. I value being someone clients can contact when something changes in their lives, when an important decision comes up, or when they simply need to talk through the financial implications of what is happening.
Those conversations are an important part of understanding clients over time and helping keep their financial decisions connected to what matters to them.
What I appreciate about Savvy is that it lets me stay close to my clients. I bring my own background and approach, with their technology and infrastructure behind me — which means less of my time on administration and more of it on the work clients hired me for.
