Get to know James

James Soukup brings more than 20 years of financial advisory experience to his work with individuals and families. He has been a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional since 2014 and focuses much of his work on helping clients prepare for retirement and organize the different pieces of their financial lives.

His interest in investing began well before his professional career. James grew up on a farm in eastern Nebraska, where some of his first paychecks came from moving irrigation pipe and detasseling seed corn. At around 12 years old, James and his brother each raised a bucket calf and used some of the proceeds to buy stock. That early experience sparked an interest in investing that would eventually become his career.

James earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and later earned his MBA from the University of Arkansas. Over the course of his career, he has worked in both large and small financial services organizations, including full-service and discount brokerage environments.

Today, James works with individuals and families from a wide range of backgrounds and at many different stages of life, including farmers, business owners, educators and other professionals, and retirees. He takes a comprehensive approach to financial planning, helping clients navigate retirement and income planning, investment and asset allocation strategies, concentrated stock positions, tax-aware planning, and estate and legacy considerations.

Relationships are central to how James works. He takes time to understand a client's background, family, priorities, and plans for retirement. Sometimes that means meeting across a conference table. Other times, it can mean making a house call and getting to know a client over the dinner table.

James and his wife, Mikka, live in Linwood, Kansas, with their three children. Outside of work, he enjoys gardening, attending his children's sporting events, and fishing local ponds. He is also a member of Trout Unlimited.

He is a member of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers and a founding member of MoKan Trout Unlimited.

How did you become a financial advisor?

My interest in investing started when I was young. I grew up on a farm in eastern Nebraska, and when I was around 12 years old, my brother and I each raised a bucket calf. We took some of the money we made and each bought stock.

That experience stuck with me. I was fascinated by investing and by the idea of having a career where I could work with people and their finances.

I went on to earn my undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and my MBA from the University of Arkansas. My career in financial advising has now spanned more than 20 years, and I've been a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional since 2014. Today, a significant part of my work is helping people prepare for retirement and navigate the financial decisions that come with it.

What areas of expertise do you have?

I focus on comprehensive financial planning with an emphasis on preparing for and living through retirement.

My work commonly includes financial planning, retirement planning, income planning, asset allocation, concentrated stock positions, and legacy planning. I've spent more than 20 years advising clients on their financial lives and have been a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional since 2014.

What types of clients do you work with?

I really enjoy working with people who have spent much of their lives working and are now preparing to retire and spend more time doing what they love.

My clients come from many different backgrounds. I work with farmers and business owners as well as retirees from a variety of careers. I also work with many retired teachers, railroad employees, and people who have spent their careers in manufacturing.

The occupations may be different, but many of these clients share a similar question: How do I turn everything I've worked for into a retirement that supports the life I want?

What types of strategies do you usually help clients with?

A large part of my work involves helping clients understand how the pieces of their finances can work together as they approach and enter retirement.

That can include building a retirement plan, determining how income will be generated, reviewing asset allocation, addressing concentrated stock positions, and thinking through legacy goals.

The specific strategy depends on the client. I want to understand what they have built, what they need from their resources, and what they want retirement to look like before putting the pieces together.

Is there a unique approach that sets you apart?

I believe good financial planning starts with getting to know the client where they are. For me, that means understanding more than account balances and investment statements. I want to know about their family, their career, what they enjoy, what they are looking forward to, and what they want their retirement years to look like.

It isn't unusual for me to make a house call or get to know clients over the dinner table. Those conversations give me context for the financial decisions we make together and help keep the plan connected to the person behind it.

What is your favorite part about working with clients?

The best part of my job is getting to know my clients and learning what is important to them.

Everyone brings a different background, story, and set of experiences to the table. I enjoy bringing those conversations together with the financial side of planning and showing clients how the different pieces connect.

It is especially rewarding to work with someone who has spent decades building toward retirement and help create a plan designed around their goals and the way they want to spend that next stage of life.
