Get to know Luis

I came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic at age 11. As an immigrant, I had to learn two languages: English, and money. My parents instilled hard work and education as pillars of success. I did not get a chance to learn personal finance concepts at home or in school, so I can relate to professionals who are advancing in their careers as they plan for their futures, yet feel a certain inadequacy around money.

Seeing my parents' journey to create a better life for us inspired me to do better, not only for myself, but to empower others to build a better financial future for themselves. More specifically, I observed how much harder it can be for women, as they tend to more likely be in a caretaker role. My mother had to do very physical jobs her whole life, while also raising six kids and taking care of elderly parents. She also outlived my dad, which further compounded the need for her financial security.

How did you become a financial advisor?

I graduated college with a degree in Economics and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, other than I liked people and numbers. I was introduced to a financial planner that worked with a CPA partner and he was looking for a part-time associate. I started working with them immediately and fell in love with financial planning once I saw the positive impact it has in clients' lives.

What areas of expertise do you have?

I became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERā„¢ professional in order to help other First Gen wealth creators like myself pursue their goals. I do my best to keep it simple, so no fancy jargon or investment terms. It’s all about your vision of success and how I can help you on your way to building a better financial future. In addition to being a Certified Financial PlannerĀ®, I also have an IRS Enrolled Agent designation and I incorporate my tax planning expertise into the financial planning process in order to help clients optimize their investments and revenue streams as we work toward achieving their goals.

What types of clients do you work with?

I help high-earning first generation wealth creators. Although not from any specific background, they are the first in their families to be making high six figures and achieved the level of income and wealth that they have. Even though they're high earners, they still feel some inadequacy around money because they did not learn it at home or in school, and are looking to team up with a financial planner that can help them navigate their finances and work toward their goals.

What types of strategies do you usually help clients with?

I help clients get organized, get clarity, and implement actionable steps to pursue their goals. Tax planning is a key piece of what I usually help clients with because it is a very forward looking approach.

Is there a unique approach that sets you apart?Ā 

As a first generation wealth creator myself, I know what it's like to be the first of many in my family. I understand where the client is coming from, and I provide a safe space to not feel judged or inadequate, and provide information to empower my clients to make decisions they feel confident about. My tax background also sets me apart as I integrate it into the overall planning process, which helps better coordinate strategies for the client.

What is your favorite part about working with clients?Ā 

I love providing clients the clarity and piece of mind that they need to focus on living their lives. Establishing long-term relationships with my clients and seeing them grow and get closer to their goals is one of my favorite parts about what I do.Ā
